FAQ
Q: When was Bworth Fur Kids Home established?
For love and mercy for animals, in 2009 our family provided a small private animal shelter, later known as B’worth Fur Kids Home on a village beach front land of 12,000 sq. feet in Telok ayer Tawar, Butterworth with rescued stray animals, mostly dogs and cats that were victims of abuse, neglect , loss or abandonment.
The main objectives were to facilitate a more comfortable, spacious place for these animals we considered as pets and kids and a place where they could enjoy the beaches and unleashed to run free in the open field.
Q: Who is the founder? Why & How he/she/the team start up this organization?
The shelter was founded by kenken jong (me) .My father since our childhood has inspired the family to cultivate respect and compassion in our lives through his actions and examples. Therefore I believe the foundation of compassionate practice has been built in early childhood through witness, lessons and experience.
My conscience is always not clear when I see an injured or sick dog unsaved and left abandoned on the road. I started helping animals in every opportunity. With time, I have increased my involvement and started the private shelter with some help from family members. Gradually strays, injured and surrendered animals were taken in to the shelter.
As years advanced, animal population has increased due to additional inflow of unwanted animals from the public. In 2015 the shelter has been challenged by the local authorities to relocate the existing location to a place deemed more suitable by them. We will be relocating to Juru to a 1.6 acre leased land from MPSP. As we have been monitored by authorities to the limited number of animals at existing shelter. Presently, the number of dogs and cats have been reduced to at 252 and 50 respectively scattered at few temporary places
Q: How many members and volunteers do you have?
Our existing members in the committee stand at 20. Registered Volunteers 6 members. We urgently require members from the community to volunteer in grooming which includes bathing, hygiene care and trimming for our 252 dogs and 50 cats. Most Sundays, we also need volunteers from 8 am to 12 pm at beach street, penang, to participate in ‘Occupy Beach Street’ event to raise funds for the new shelter building in Juru, Butterworth.
Q:What is your organization’s mission and vision?
MISSION
To provide the stray animals a legal shelter where they can call home with own veterinary clinic for medical facilities, but most importantly to spare them the heartbreak, give them a spacious ground to run, the minds of freedom, happiness, trust and renewed faith in humans. They have the option to be adopted by responsible and caring people. Invite trainers to transform shelter dogs into great family members, help them learn good canine manners so they could be more lovable for adoption. Don’t say ‘it’s just a dog.’ It’s more than ‘just.’ It brings into life the very essence of friendship, the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
VISION
To develop a humane community in which all animals are treated with respect and kindness. Protect the strays with love - keep them off the streets, give them a home they deserve.
Q: Do Bworth Fur Kids Home has any shelter or boarding centre?
We are in the midst of relocating our shelter to a rented state land of 1.6 acre from MPSP. Please refer http://www.thestar.com.my/metro/community/2016/02/10/relocate-dog-shelter-urge-villagers/ At the moment under close monitoring from the local council while awaiting relocation there is no provision for animal boarding except for the existing shelter dogs. But some members of public who like to foster or support dogs of their choice, we have a list of dogs on request for selection: food 180 health care, maintenance 40 total: 220 monthly ( small breed dogs include grooming )
Q: Currently, there are how many strays in your shelter?
We have 252 dogs and 50 cats dispersed at two of our shelters and some have been fostered at fosterers homes
Q: So far, there are how many strays has been rescued and re-homed by Bworth Fur Kids Home?
So far since operation, dogs rescued including those abandoned or thrown at our shelter main gate , are about 500. However rehomed rate of animals are low The less impressive adoption rate may be due to animals being handicapped, aged and busy schedule or lack of compassion for animals from public. And we only select eligible and responsible potentials. We will create educational classes at the new venue with the purpose of bringing awareness and cultivate love and compassion for animals. These actions hopefully make them reconsider when they intend to disown their animals.
Q: So far, there are how many strays has been rescued and re-homed by Bworth Fur Kids Home?
The usual procedure is to fill the application form for adoption. To ensure genuine adoption we need to register details of adopters with their IC copy and visit their residence to determine info match. They need to allow surprise visits from our representatives to follow up wellbeing of the animals and if found otherwise they have to surrender their adopted dogs or cats. We are in need of visiting volunteers for this purpose.
Q: May I know the amount of monthly expenditure?
RM 10k including medical fees, workers salary, and food. These monthly expenses derive from public funds and members donation. Unfortunately donated funds from public are less impressive so far, so members need to sacrifice their income or EPF savings to make ends meet every month . That is why its said comically that most local shelter owners are practically broke. J With sincere request, we welcome donations for upkeeping of the shelter and challenge for the new project - raising funds for upcoming shelter in Juru which requires minimum RM700k (clearing and levelling of land , building of fencing, and the shelter. Please refer proposed drawing of plan in the Donation page
Q: What are the challenges do you usually face?
We are registered NGO an organization survived by own funding and support from public. We hope the community understands the position of the shelter to maintain the hundreds of dogs and cats daily expenses, to look into food sufficiency, health maintenance and proper living conditions. It is sad there are owners who think of their pets as disposable items. Are they concern about how scared their dogs are when left abandoned. Have they witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being “put-down” killed for food, abused and run over by vehicles? Shout out for ‘ Protect & Love your animals” support the shelter which extends mercy and care for these victimised helpless voiceless animals
Q: What is your opinion on euthanize (“put to sleep”) animals?
Our organization supports ‘non PTS ‘ unless animal suffers intensive pain. The right to live is always respected especially when they have short lifespan of averagely 12 to 13 years only
Q: How do the public reach out to your organization?
If you are interested in helping in anyway, volunteering or donation
Whatsapp +601120206868 BFKH line for enquiry
Q: In your opinion, what are the main difficulties in animal rescue?
Stray dogs with less exposure to people and some victims of abuse are shy and hard to catch. You approach them, they run further away from you. Main difficulty in animal rescue is when you are challenged to trap or catch aggressive or unfriendly dogs. Some of the ways practiced by our more experienced member friends are through sedation using meat or a dog catch pole to hook to its neck then move to the cage. We love to help animals that need protection but we need caution, patience and more training to execute the job. We welcome trainers to train our members for more effective work done in this connection and trainers who can give basic good manners to make them more eligible or lovable for adoption.
Q: In your opinion, do you think the level of public awareness about pet adoption in Malaysia is high enough? Why?

Q: In your opinion, do you think the level of public awareness about pet adoption in Malaysia is high enough? Why?
There is a need to make animal welfare an issue of importance in society - educate the public on animal appreciation, run public awareness campaigns on cat and dog issues. For instance, to invite a speaker with animal related background or a veterinarian to present talks to the community , foster clear awareness and teach animal welfare to children, our future leaders.
Animal cruelty does come in many forms. It is a common sight to see abandoned animals and puppies in public places particularly market areas.
The reason they are simply dumped could be due to excessive animals in their living places or sick animals that affect medical expenses. It is therefore vital to raise awareness on animal spaying or neutering which will result in fewer strays and homeless unwanted animals. Animals do feel physical pain as we do. In the case of animal abuse , we notice the psysical painful scars but are we aware that emotional suffering from the abuse is far more difficult to see, that is an invisible world of hurt , an awareness to note.
We support ‘Adopt don’t buy’
Q: In your opinion, do you think the level of public awareness about pet adoption in Malaysia is high enough? Why?
In their short lifespan, they spend most of it missing us, just waiting to welcome us home every day
Treasure them as much as they treasure you, we see abuse and cruelty done to harmless animals every day
Don’t do anything bad the these animals!
My mission is to change the world, the way people treat animals.
